Scholarships

As the need to provide for bursaries has increased, so the financial value of scholarships has been reduced, but the school still offers scholarships under several headings, at 11+, 13+ and 16+ as follows:

Academic scholarships are awarded on the basis of examination performance, interview and school report. In the 6th Form, awards are made based on GCSE results (eight or more A* passes being the current benchmark).

The maximum award is now limited to £1800 per annum, but awards range in value from £600 to £1,800 per annum. These include a number of closed awards available only to pupils in Brontë House on the basis of school recommendation and interview.

Scholarship awards are fixed at the same level throughout a pupil’s career at Woodhouse Grove, but are subject to the scholar maintaining a satisfactory level of work and academic progress.

Music Scholarships of circa £450-£900 per annum are made to cover the annual tuition costs on one or two instruments. In some cases, awards may be larger than this. Awards are made at 11+ to external candidates on the basis of auditions held at the school and may be made to internal candidates at any time on the basis of the recommendation of the Director of Music. These awards are subject to an annual review.

Sports Scholarships are only made in the Sixth Form when outstanding sporting ability can be distinguished from childhood promise and enthusiasm. Nevertheless, even at 11+ and 13+, sporting considerations may be included in the award of ‘All Rounder Scholarships’. These awards are similar to the Music Award in value, but could be combined with academic awards in some cases.
